About Queenstown Junior Football Club

The Queenstown Junior Football Club Incorporated is a non-profit organisation, and a registered Charity. It was first formed in the 1980’s for the promotion and organisation of football within the Wakatipu Basin with about 50 to 60 members; it now has over 350 members and is a great way to meet a wide variety of new people in this district. QJFC practices and games are all held at a central location at the Queenstown Event Centre at Frankton. The Central Otago League games (for the 8 to 16 grades) are hosted in succession by each Central Otago club every Sunday (these clubs being; Cromwell, Alexandra, Wanaka and Queenstown).

The QJF club’s aims are to promote and foster the game of football within the Wakatipu basin for players of school ages (from 5 years to 18 years). The youngest players (5 and 6 year olds) start on a Friday evening with skills and games for an hour. From there, the players graduate through the age grade teams (beginning with under 8 year grade) who train on a Wednesday evening (4pm onwards) and play two games on a Sunday as part of the Central Otago League (run by the Central Otago Football Association). Once players reach 17 years old, they join the Youth Development Team which plays on a Saturday in an adult league around Central Otago. The club maintains very close links with Wakatipu High School and many of the Youth Development team make up the Wakatipu High School First XI.

The junior football season in Central Otago runs from April to the end of June. Registration takes place mid-February with training starting early March. The Central Otago League finishes at the end of the school term 2 (end of June). During the school term 3 (July to September) the Central Otago Representative teams play around the South Island and the Wakatipu High School teams play in the Southland College League and Secondary School championships. The elite players aged 14-16, can also be selected for the Federation (Football South) teams that play in the National Championships in Napier.

The club is run by an elected committee with an appointed manager. The Club Manager deals with the general day to day running of the club.
